Keep the peninsula as the trip
For a manageable coastal break, focus on the Long Beach Peninsula rather than attaching a complete Olympic Peninsula circuit. Ilwaco or Long Beach can work as a base depending on your route and budget. Cape Disappointment sits near the southern end, while Leadbetter Point gives the northern part a different landscape.
Pick one main park outing each day and leave time for meals and the drive between them. These are editorial suggestions, not a timed itinerary. A weekend is enough to notice the contrast without continuing north just because other destinations appear in the same guide chapter.
Start with an open headland outing
Cape Disappointment combines forest, coastal views, lighthouses, and interpretation around the meeting of river and ocean. Choose one focus from the official map, such as the North Head area or another open walk. Check lighthouse and interpretive-building hours separately from general park access.
As checked on October 4, 2026, the park lists an October paving closure at the boat launch and reduced campground entrance access. Read the live construction notice for your dates. Day-use, camping, and launch access are different questions; avoid treating one notice as the status of the entire park.
Let Leadbetter change the scale
Leadbetter Point shifts the visit toward forest, dunes, and the Willapa Bay setting. Choose an established trail from the current map and bring binoculars if watching birds interests you. A short bay-side or woodland outing can provide a quieter counterpoint to the exposed headland landscape.
Bird sightings are never guaranteed. Follow wildlife boundaries and posted seasonal restrictions, and stay on designated paths. If a route is flooded or closed, turn back or choose another open option rather than making a new path through dunes or nesting habitat.
Enjoy the ocean from a sensible distance
Washington State Parks advises against ocean swimming on the Long Beach Peninsula. Treat the shoreline as a place to observe from a safe position, following current beach-hazard guidance. A dramatic wave photograph is not a reason to approach wave-washed rocks or stand at an exposed edge.
Bring layers and a plan that works when wind or rain shortens the outing. Check forecast conditions and the actual route, and leave a comfortable return margin. A sheltered meal or an open interpretation stop can replace a walk when the weather changes; the holiday does not depend on completing a particular trail.
A flexible two-day shape
On arrival day, make Cape Disappointment the anchor if its open areas and conditions suit your group. Give Leadbetter Point the next morning, allowing for the drive back down the peninsula. Swap the order or simplify if construction, weather, or trail information suggests a better plan.
Check the current parking-pass requirements and any separately charged experiences before leaving. The Washington guide includes this peninsula pair alongside 34 other destinations, six regional chapters, map links, and practical cautions. Use those wider options for a future trip rather than stretching this weekend.
