Mount Rainier tire chains belong on your planning list before the rental-car keys are in your hand. A mountain day begins well before the first view: with a vehicle you understand, equipment that fits, and permission to change the plan.
Ask the rental company before booking
The National Park Service requires vehicles traveling in the park to carry chains from November 1 through May 1, including rentals and four-wheel-drive vehicles, even in clear weather. Carrying chains and being required to fit them are different things; follow the posted traction instructions.
Before reserving a car, ask the rental company which traction devices its vehicle permits and whether its agreement allows their use. Then check the vehicle manufacturer’s guidance. An upgrade to all-wheel drive does not remove the park’s carry requirement, and a generic reservation may not tell you the actual tire size.
- Confirm a compatible device for the vehicle and tire size you actually collect; do not assume a borrowed set fits.
- Practice installation somewhere dry before the trip. Pack gloves and keep the equipment accessible rather than buried beneath luggage.
- If you cannot arrange suitable equipment or feel uncomfortable driving in winter conditions, change the outing instead of relying on a sunny forecast.
Leave room for the gate to stay closed
NPS says the Longmire-to-Paradise road can open late, close early or remain closed because of conditions. Check the park’s current winter-travel information and alerts before leaving, then follow notices on arrival. Having chains is preparation, not a promise of access.
Use our Washington State guide to shape the wider trip, with another suitable day in reserve. A flexible itinerary leaves space for the mountain to set the pace.
