Visiting Armstrong Redwoods with dogs starts with a distinction worth making before the car is packed: pets can enter some areas, but the forest trails are off limits. Plan around the walk you can share, rather than discovering the restriction at a trail junction.

Keep the outing on the paved road

California State Parks permits leashed dogs on the reserve’s main paved road and in developed picnic areas. Dogs are not allowed on dirt trails or dirt roads. That rules out treating a pet-friendly park listing as permission to wander along the grove’s nature trails.

For an outing together, consider a modest walk along the permitted road and a pause in an allowed picnic area. This is a planning suggestion, not a trail recommendation. Read the current park notices and map before leaving, and follow signs and staff guidance when you arrive.

Pack for the dog’s day, too

  • Bring a leash no longer than six feet and keep your dog physically under control, as California State Parks requires.
  • Carry water, a bowl and waste bags; clean up after your dog.
  • Do not leave your dog unattended while you explore a restricted trail. Arrange care beforehand if the nature-trail walk is the reason for your visit.

These are pet rules; trained service animals have different access provisions. Check the state’s official guidance if that applies to your visit.

Use our California guide to shape the wider trip, then check pet access separately for every stop you choose. A shorter outing that welcomes the whole group can be more satisfying than a beautiful plan that leaves someone waiting. The trees do not need a long itinerary.
